Child Abuse and Neglect

The DC Victim Hotline has compiled a list of frequently needed resources related to child abuse and neglect. This is not an exhaustive list of options available to you. The resources listed consist of both national and local resources. DC Resources

Child and Family Services Agency (CFSA): CFSA works to improve the safety, permanence, and well-being of abused and neglected children in the District of Columbia and to strengthen their families. CFSA takes reports of child abuse and neglect 24 hours a day, seven days a week at (202) 671-SAFE (202-671-7233). This hotline is the gateway to protection and help for child victims and those at risk up to age 18 in the District of Columbia. 

Safe Shores: Safe Shores coordinates the work of medical and mental health providers, social services professionals, victim advocates, law enforcement, and prosecution officials to reduce trauma and promote healing for child victims of abuse. Contact their office at 202-645-3200. Sasha Bruce: Sasha Bruce helps young people find safe homes, achieve and maintain good physical and mental health, create and strengthen supportive and stable families, and explore opportunities in education and careers. Call their hotline at 202-547-7777. 

Children and Adolescent Protection Center: The Freddie Mac Foundation Child and Adolescent Protection Center is the only medical center in the District of Columbia with a team of health professionals dedicated to victims of child abuse and their families, and one of the few hospitals in the country using a team approach to assessing and treating these victims. Call at 202-476-4100. 

Crime Victim Compensation: The Crime Victims Compensation Program provides financial assistance and reimbursement to innocent victims of violent crime and their families with crime-related expenses. Call 202-879-4216, mail an application, or email [email protected]

MPD Victim Services Branch: MPD’s Victim Services Branch provides support, information, and referrals to victims and their families. Call at 202-727-9099

MPD Domestic Violence Unit: The Domestic Violence Unit serves as a liaison among the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), the US Attorney’s Office, other law enforcement agencies, victim service agencies, victim advocates and the community in the Washington, D.C. area. Call at 202-727-7137. 

National Resources

Child Protective Services: your local CPS agency may be able to help by investigating your situation and connecting you to local support services or law enforcement. Find out more about this process in your state by clicking here.  

The Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline: Call 1-800-422-4453 or chat with a confidential crisis counselor for crisis intervention, information, and referrals to thousands of emergency, social service, and support resources in your community.  

The National Runaway Safeline: The National Runaway Safeline provides crisis and support services for homeless and runaway youth in the United States. If you are a teen and in need of confidential help and assistance, call 1-800-786-2929 or text 66008. For more info email [email protected]

National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC): NCMEC serves as a clearinghouse and comprehensive reporting center for all issues related to the prevention of and recovery from child victimization. NCMEC’s CyberTipline is the nation’s centralized reporting system for the online exploitation of children. Call NCMEC’s hotline at 1-800-843-5678.
